Literacy Festival

What a way to finish up Term 2!

Wesley Primary's Literacy Festival kicked off last Wednesday and finished up today. Our focus author in Room 4 was Melanie Drewery. We also put a lot of time and effort into Poetry Slam and Speeches.

Here are a couple of images of our Literacy Festival display.

We not only wrote our own poems but presented them. We had to think about including body language, gestures, pauses for effect and altering our voice to set the tone.

Week 7

We have been working towards using our own blogs!

We've had lessons around what information we should/is safe to include and who we are going to be able to share our learning with.

These are some of the people Sopheighra is looking forward to sharing with.

Samoan Language Week

Today we were visited by Tuli! 

She taught us the alphabet and some common words to help us celebrate Samoan Language Week.

Waiata - Week 5

For the last few Tuesdays we have been learning our new Karakia and Waiata.

Here is one of our Waiata designed by Sarah.

Once we've had a bit more practise we'll put up a video or sound bite.

Week 2

We have been working on responding to what we have read (as well as developing a better understanding of what our learning focus is and how we know we've achieved this).

Here are some of Sarah's thoughts about a text called "The Rules".

Reading: WALT: Create a personal response to the text and share I CAN.. Say what I liked or didn’t like about the story. Say what I liked or didn’t like about characters. Connect to the story, share a similar experience. Where can the success criteria be found in my work? Remember to highlight where this information is found.

What I liked about the story is that the boy Matiora was playing violin, which he enjoyed. He did this for tickets for his mum to go to her favourite band. Matiora made Lots of money from people who liked his music and supported him.

What I didn’t like about the story was when Sefa dropped his violin in the lake so then Matiora got in trouble.

But then the mum’s brother told her about the tickets so then she calmed down.

What I didn’t like about Sefa was when he took Matiora’s violin and never gave it back so when Matiora bumped him Sefa dropped his violin on purpose in the lake. Also because Sefa was being mean and snatching things that weren’t his property.

I can connect to this because I had a scooter and then my brother came and broke it because he broke his own and he was jealous because my one wasn’t broken.

Week 1!

Welcome back to Room 4 at Wesley Primary - Term 2!

We have started our Inquiry around "The shaping of our landscape"

Here is the planning for some writing Sopheighra has been working on. She is describing an image of a landscape.

See	I see a rainbow that has wondrous lands of beauty drifting across the the place as it sets for vacation.
Hear	As i walk past i hear the bluebirds sing and the red robins fling as they fly away.
Smell	I smell the summer breeze as it passes me by i wake up in the morning and feel so surprised.
Feel	I feel like there’s something i feel so cool i would never stop feeling it cause wherever i go i feel the flow.
Interesting words	Flow,summer breeze,fling,wondrous,beauty,drifting.
Similes/metaphors	This waterfall is as beautiful as me Make a smile that will light up the room you're as handsome as a prince Close your mouth that make the room dark for storytime in bed.

Week 10: 

We have been learning new astounding facts about the brain!

Andrea thought about similarities and differences between a human brain and a Chromebook/laptop.

Week 8

We have been looking at using positive language so that we are being "Respectful and Responsible" members of the Wesley Community. Here is the beginning of Noah's comic - teaching people how to use positive language.

Our connections

We have been learning about the connections we have in our lives. 

We mapped out our connections to the people and places in our lives and what these mean to us. We hope to see the connections we have and reasons for having them growing over the year.

SMRF it!

We have been learning about strong passwords and how to make copies of documents. We've been using the acronym "SMRF it" to help us remember to: Stop, Make a copy, Rename, File.

Week 7 - CyberSmart game.

Today we were making a CyberSmart game. In the slides we used a variety of links and resources relating to what we have been learning with James. (James is a person that work's for Ako Hiko cluster of schools and helps us with our learning). 

If you have any ideas of what resources might be useful to add in the slide, we would like you to share your ideas with us. Also, please let us know if any links are not working quite right.

Week 5

On Friday we were lucky enough to go to Tiritiri matangi which is a conservation island about an hour from downtown Auckland by boat. It was a wonderful day full of new experiences and learning opportunities. We went to the downtown Auckland ferry terminal by bus, from there we caught the ferry to Tiritiri matangi. Educators met us there and we split into groups for a guided walk up to the lighthouse. Here are a few photos from the day. Please check back to see some of our follow up learning.

Week 4

We have been learning about Copyright with James this week. Here are some of Fareni's thoughts on what you should think about before using that image/video/music before checking it is free to use or being given permission.

Week 3

We have been learning about Habitats and Human Impact. We looked at a variety of images and discussed our thoughts on the habitat shown. We have had a focus on images of Deforestation and Global Warming.

The image above prompted Evynesence to do some further research on Deforestation.

Here are some facts she learned:

Deforestation notes

*Deforestation is a process from logging and burning

*12-15 million trees are lost each year - 36 football fields per minute.

*When forest cover is removed wildlife is deprived of habitat.

*Deforestation earth's biodiversity at risk.

*Deforestation causes 15% global greenhouse gas releases

How to stop deforestation

*Recycle lots and lots of paper to help 17 trees

*Buy products that are made from recycled materials (paper, tissues, plastic cups etc…)

*Reuse envelopes and paper bags

*Think first before printing

*Plant trees

Welcome back to Room 4 for Term 4!

During the last week of Term 3 we visited Auckland Zoo to get a head start on our Conservation/Habitat and Human Impact topic for this term.

Week 7. Swimming begins!

Room 4 enjoyed their first swimming lessons for weeks 7 and 8. Developing our skills in the water which is so important for us here in New Zealand! Remember to come to school Tues-Fri W7 and W8 with swimwear.

So far in Week 6...

Blog commenting has been a big focus for us this term and is something we will continue to work on.

This week we have been using a template to help structure our comments. Here is one Nafisa has started. Her next step will be to edit and work with a buddy to make any other improvements.

 

We have also started working on some new animations. We will be planning these and working on them over the next week or two, so check back here to see how our comments improve and for our animation clips.
